Thornfield Residence
This retrofit and extension of an existing terrace within a designated conservation area exemplifies a refined architectural approach that balances heritage sensitivity with contemporary liveability. The design responds with rigour to planning constraints, conservation guidance, and urban topography, reworking a dated structure into a cohesive, energy-efficient residential ensemble that respects its context while projecting a quiet modernity.
The scheme retains the terrace’s original massing and rhythm, essential to the conservation character, while upgrading its fabric and performance. The mansard-style roofscape—carefully modelled and proportioned—is reinterpreted in standing seam zinc with flush dormer windows that echo the vertical emphasis of the historic fenestration. This roof form meets conservation officer expectations while discreetly introducing an additional storey of habitable space

Planning success hinged on early consultation with the local conservation team, supported by a detailed heritage impact assessment and photorealistic visualisations. Rather than mimic or contrast aggressively, the proposal adopts a deferential yet contemporary tonem, prioritising proportion, materiality, and context. The result is an exemplar of retrofit-led urban regeneration: subtle, sustainable, and enduring.

Sustainability measures are integral to the design, implemented discreetly to preserve the historic character. External insulation is added to the party walls internally, triple-glazed units are installed behind retained openings, and green roofs supplement stormwater attenuation
Strategic structural insertions allow open-plan living areas to flow within the constraints of the retained envelope, subtly increasing usable floor area without breaching conservation restrictions.
